Focus

I wish I could multi-task.
The girl next to me in class is doing more e-mail and chat than listening. And just made a very intelligent comment.
Drat.

Shuffling

I thought it would be fun to give you, my loyal blog readers, a little insight into my daily life as an MBA student. I will be graduating with my MBA in 2010, therefore I am part of the class of 2010. The BYU MBA Class of 2010 is made up of 150 students. The average age is 28. 20% are female. And I’m the second tallest. (The only consolation is that the tallest guy is name Wagner, pronounced Vagner. Very cool.) The class has been divided into three sections of 50 each and I am in Section 1.

The program has a certain set of classes that all students must take called the MBA core. The first semester of the program is 100% core. Signing up for classes was easy: I clicked one button in the registration system and my six classes were added. For Section 1 our classes start at 8am every day and are held in the same classroom (W208). We even have a seating chart. That’s right, a seating chart. And this is the main topic of today’s post.

On the first day of class we found a copy of the seating chart in our mailboxes. The chart had my seat on the right side, second row, second seat in from the aisle. A decent seat, a little out of the instructor’s line of sight, but comfortable and a place where I could be seen if I want to make a comment. I started settling in thinking this would be my home for the next four months.

Then things started going a little crazy.

A new wing of the business school was opened. After one day of classes, we were moved to a room with a different floor plan. Each row had a different number of seats, we couldn’t sit per the chart, but we adapted, making room here and there for our classmates. Ain’t no thing, right?

Wrong. One day later we get an e-mail with a new seating chart attached. So, next class we find our new seats, start to settle in and …

BAM. Another new seating chart. So now I’m way off to the side, back row, no leg room, blurry to our operations professor who is partially blind. But I’ll survive. I can speak out. I can make myself noticed.

But, please, don’t send me another seating chart.

Stewing

  1. The cough persists and the runny nose is back. Universe, you are kidding me, right? I haven't attended a single class this semester in full health.
  2. My accounting class is working me to the bone, with Statements of Cash Flows, forecastings of these statements, and more Excel than I ever thought possible. Now I sit staring at an non-balancing Statement of Cash Flows wondering what to do.
  3. For dinner tonight Kristin made the most amazing stew. This particular dish is the one food that Clara will eat until she explodes. I had two bowls full. A little old world bread on the side and I was in heaven.
  4. Did I mention the animated sitcom I watched? The one with a maniacal little boy?
Today's theme is?

Songs by Matchbox 20 for $800, Alex

It is 1:04p.
Church started at 1p.
And I'm blogging.

Welcome to the sick house.

The Cold of Death was finally passed from Clara to Mommy, so we're 3 for 3. I got the cold from a guy on my team at school - who consequently got it from another guy on the team who got it from a different guy on the team; yes, four of us have had this cold - then brought it home. I first felt the effects a week ago Thursday. Runny nose for five days followed by a few days of very sore throat and a cough. Clara is still in Phase I and Kristin is in Phase "Kill Husband for Getting Spawn AND ME Sick."

Unfortunately, I no longer have sick days. Work load for classes is intense, with an average for 20 pages of reading per class per day. We're also knee deep in case preparations - AND DID I MENTION ACCOUNTING?!? Accountants are their own special brand of crazy.

Speaking of accountants, David was in town the last few days and we got to see him a bunch. Last night he and I did the completely irresponsible and went to a 9:45p showing of Hancock. How I love second-run theaters. Two tickets for $3.00. $1.50 per ticket. Eat that, Tysons.

Kristin just put Clara down for a nap, and we're going to attempt the same. Hopefully some sleep will rid us of the disease.
